In a final congratulatory post, I extend my commendation to Chris Weitz, the director of New Moon. While I can’t say I am happy about the film’s success, and would rather commiserate him for taking the job, he does deserve congratulations for supporting the alleged Birthday Pirate in Chicago. For those unfamiliar with the story, Samantha Tumpach accidentally captured images from the new movie in the theater while filming part of her sister’s surprise birthday party. It is clear that there was no intent to pirate the film, but Tumpach is facing felony charges and spent two days in jail after being arrested at the theater. This is simply more evidence of the twilight of common sense.

I was actually caught off guard by this article which reports Google plans to allow publishers to “set a limit on the number of free news articles people can read through Google.” This is apparently in response to Rupert Murdoch who thinks Google is a plagiarist. I am baffled, and frankly this makes me believe the reports that Murdoch has never used Google. He is a fan of the paywall model of news site, which is fine. It is best exemplified by the New York Times or Wall Street Journal websites, where many of the articles require a subscription. These sites aren’t unsuccessful, and there are people who are willing to pay for the value of their content. However, from my perspective Murdoch has it wrong when it comes to cutting off Google, particularly when it comes to this compromise. I think it it clear that by keeping me out of his sites through my use of Google, I am less likely to see the value in subscribing to the site than if I am allowed to freely access articles from Google. In fact, if I am not linked to a Newscorp site through Google, I’m not going to see a Newscorp site at all. Doesn’t this worry Murdoch? How is he going to attract new subscribers? What really surprises me though, is that Google has willingly made this strange compromise. I think Google should not be afraid of being blocked by Newscorp, but Newscorp and others should be leery of blocking Google.

In another post with a wonderful class tie-in, I though I’d mention how I, like many others, used to think that the Internet, and more so text messaging, were destroying literacy. However, my good friend Stephen Fry has quelled my concern and renewed my faith in humanity. First of all, as we’ve read in class, literacy is a function of past literacy and the current resources available for literacy. Literacy does not go away, but it evolves along with technology. The worry that the Kindle and the Internet will destroy books and newsprint is valid, but mainly an economical argument. It is not unlike how before digital piracy of movies and music, the RIAA and MPAA were worried about tape cassettes and the VHS destroying their business. Fry points out that so too did the rise of subscription libraries and the novel bring about worries of change for the worse.

The literature at the time in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, describing the contempt that the learned establishment had for the rise of the novel – and then of course later with the rise of the penny dreadfuls and sensational literature as more and more people came to read it – again there was a great cry of despair at how there would be nothing but illiteracy in the world, or at least a kind of refusal or inability to engage in proper, serious study.

Additionally, the barely-English abbreviations that I despise in text messages are nothing new. “You look at a letter written by a 17th or 18th century letter writer, and you’ll see far more abbreviation.” Paper and ink were expensive then, just as text messages are outrageously overpriced now.

So, no longer do I fear for future generations. Well, I still fear, but it is for reasons other than the demise of literacy brought on by texting and Facebook. Check out Stephen Fry’s other thoughts on the Internet, including MySpace and Facebook snobbery, what Twitter is, and where the web can take you.

This week’s missive revolves around a recommendation for your viewing pleasure. Anyone with the opportunity to watch the three-part series Electric Dreams should not pass it up. The BBC Four show follows a family as they are transported back in time to 1970, and slowly regain all of their electronic creature comforts over the course of 30 years (each year represented as a day). This recommendation happens to coincide with the week in LIS201 where we are instructed to avoid social communication via computers (Facebook, Twitter, email, etc…) at all costs, so it was interesting to see a total conversion to an earlier time, rather than just giving up Facebook for a week. The setup makes it sound like some reality television fluff, but thankfully it is far from such nonsense, and was both entertaining and informative. They did a nice job making things realistic, to the point of changing the decor of the home, changing room sizes and partitions, giving the family period wardrobe, and piping in television from the era to the family’s black and white TV. Slowly, more and more gadgets start to flow in, and the show does a good job outlining the significance of certain technology and how it impacted life at the time.

As a side note, I wish that I could pay a licensing fee if it gave me access to the iPlayer in the US. Obviously, I would hope the fee would be less than a standard household license, but if it was a reasonable cost it would be much more convenient than relying on less legal methods.

As I clearly fall behind in the frantic week of midterms and projects just before Halloween, I have to take a moment to pick my winner for this year’s best Halloween costume. I quickly narrowed things down to two finalists, but picking a winner wasn’t easy. In the red corner, we have a devoted pop art fan whom would make Roy Lichtenstein proud. And in the blue corner, the perennial Star Wars fan going an extra mile (too far). In the end, as much respect as I have for fans of the arts, I have to congratulate creepy Star Wars guy on his devotion. Bonus points for admitting he’s “big enough” to “pull off the Chewbacca look” and for adding another nugget to the Cragslist gold mine.

This, like most of my posts, is already week-old news. However, a sarcastic congratulations is in order to the Miss America Organization (MAO) for selecting Rush Limbaugh as one of the judges for the 2010 competition. I know the pageant has been questioned by feminist-minded folks for many years, but apparently the MAO is dropping any pretenses it had about their competition actually promoting feminism. Limbaugh, who is one of the main propagators of the term “feminazi” and other anti-feminist slurs, would be a perfect judge for the Hooters Swimsuit Pageant, but would be the last person I would consult to judge the merit of a woman. My money says that somebody at the MAO thought the same thing, and figured this would be the easiest way to keep the contestants from having to think too hard. I guess the MAO deserves some credit, as it is apparently still the largest contributor of scholarships to women in the US. But I am still baffled, and feel the need to add some positive karma.

So, after reading Sam’s blog post (I am inclined to agree with him about the class blogs), I decided to reread the requirements for our personal web logs. And the thing is there aren’t any. We are supposed to post once a week about anything, culminating in an online activity in which we profile another student based on their blog. I actually like the idea here, but I am really hoping that for most of the students it is no more than a fun week of stalking and stereotyping another student. There really shouldn’t be anyone who isn’t at least aware of the fact that people can see what you post online, and yes that means they can judge you, and yes not everything you put online is flattering, and yes anything you say can and will be used against you. By the way, I expect a phone call from whoever is profiling me. You should be able to find my cell phone number on Google.

Also, Chris, I am hoping that with the speeches out of the way we can spark some discussions about the readings in class. This is something I am a fan of, but doesn’t work with every group of students. Sometimes you need someone to play the role of devil’s advocate, and sometimes nobody is willing to pitch in two cents. I don’t feel like there has been a lot of debate in class so far. Even though some of the readings are old, they are clearly relevant and would lend themselves to a good discussion, not only in comparison to today, but also about the state of things today. There are other areas, like file sharing for one, that I am sure you have great insights on, and are always good for discussion. In my opinion, discussion is good, tangents and rat-holes are good, and deviating from a ‘rubric’ can be good.

Congratulations to President Obama on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Like many others, I am skeptical of giving the Peace Prize to a president conducting two wars. Many others skeptical of the honor claim there are no accomplishments for Obama to be judged on, only a few diplomatic statements. They believe that, like this year’s joint winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics, who won for contributions to fiber optics and invention of the CCD in the 1960′s, winners should be chosen after their accomplishments have become part of history. However, unlike the prizes for Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and Physiology/Medicine, the Peace Prize needs to spur on future progress towards peace, so it must be awarded in a “work in progress” fashion. Also, the will of Alfred Nobel stipulates that the Peace Prize be awarded “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” This does describe the intention of much of the diplomacy Obama has performed. So personally, I’ll remain skeptically hopeful the work continues, rather than squabble any further over whether the honor is deserved.

For those who aren’t aware, NASA will be guiding a two and a half ton missile into the moon on Friday morning. Unfortunately, there are no public viewing parties scheduled in Wisconsin. I guess we’ll just have to settle for watching the impact on Twitter.

Speaking of Twitter, two men were arrested for tweeting to alert G-20 protesters of police movements in Pittsburgh last month. They will likely have to defend their right to free speech against charges of “hindering apprehension, criminal use of communication facility, and possessing instruments of crime.”

Finally, to continue my weekly congratulatory theme (without anyone in mind to really congratulate), congratulations to Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté who became the latest space tourist last week.

The public library system was in danger of loosing all of its funding when the city was unable to pass a budget, and had planned to shutter the doors of all 54 library facilities for Philadelphia on October 2nd. Luckily, the Pennsylvania State senate passed legislation on September 17th that would allow the libraries to stay open.

I am a huge fan of public libraries, so this is great news to me. There may be some people who would cringe at the thought of another “bailout.” But this is far from a bailout; this is the funding of a public institution that provides much more value to the community than is invested in it by the state. Granted, libraries are more expensive than one might think. In fact, the Seattle Public Library closed their many doors for a week at the beginning of the month to help meet a $1 million budget reduction (the closure saved them roughly $655,000).

Do you use the public library system? How valuable is it to you? Try out this nifty calculator at the American Library Association. According to it, in the past year or two the Madison Public Library has saved me somewhere between $300-$600. And in an exciting development, Mayor Cieslewicz wants to invest a ballpark of $24 million in a new Central Library.
